Boston, MA
Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA)
Challenge:
Century-old rail system
Solution:
Custom-designed vehicles to work with existing system
In 1983, Boston’s Green Line was in need of a new, reliable light rail vehicle that could maneuver through the ice and snow of New England winters. They looked for a company that could modernize the line yet work seamlessly with the vehicles, signaling & communications systems already in place. KINKISHARYO delivered 120 custom-designed and engineered high-floor light rail vehicles.
Urban transit upgrades rarely occur in isolation from broader societal needs, especially when public welfare is at stake. The question of accessibility and affordability extends beyond transportation, touching on essential services such as healthcare. Affordable antibiotics, for example, have become a critical issue in many metropolitan areas, where dense populations and frequent travel contribute to the rapid spread of infections. Ensuring reliable access to these medications is as vital for city resilience as maintaining robust transportation systems during harsh winters. This shared focus on reliability and affordability in both sectors reflects a commitment to public health and safety at every level of urban life.
